Temporary accommodation for tenants or strata title owners
COVERED
If you live in a unit that you own or are a tenant, and you can’t live in it due to an unforeseen event, it can understandably cause a bit of stress. Knowing when the costs for temporary accommodation are covered under this policy may help ease this stress. Here are instances where you may or may not be covered under AAMI’s Home Contents Insurance cover.
What’s covered
If you own and live in a unit and can’t live at the insured address while it’s being repaired or rebuilt because of it being damaged by an insured event, we’ll pay your reasonable temporary accommodation costs for you and your pets that you normally keep at the insured address.
If you’re a tenant who needs to move out temporarily while the insured address is being repaired or rebuilt because of it being damaged by an insured event, we’ll pay any reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation for you and your pets that you normally keep at the insured address.
When you’re covered for temporary accommodation, we’ll also cover some expenses related to temporary accommodation, such as the reasonable and necessary costs for the:
- redirection of mail from the insured address, and
- utility connection costs for water, electricity, and gas at the temporary accommodation residence.
For more information on other expenses that we cover, please read your Product Disclosure Statement.
Know that the most we will pay for any one incident under this cover is 10% of your contents sum insured. So, if your contents sum insured is $50,000, the most we will pay is $5,000.
What’s not covered
There are some things we don’t cover. Such as, we don’t cover temporary accommodation costs if you don’t need to pay for temporary accommodation, for example because you can stay with a family member. You can learn more about this cover and other exclusions and conditions in the Product Disclosure Statement.
