Storm surge

Storm surge

COVERED

AAMI Home Building and/or Contents Insurance classifies a storm surge as a rush of water onshore associated with a low-pressure system and caused by strong winds pushing on the ocean’s surface. Storm surge does not include actions or movements of the sea.

What’s covered

If loss or damage to your building or contents is caused by a storm surge that happens at the same time as other insured damage caused by a storm, then you can lodge a claim.

Keep in mind that we will cover loss or damage to your building and/or contents caused by a landslide or subsidence proved to have occurred within 72 hours of, and directly because of, a storm surge that happens at the same time as other insured damage caused by storm and not because of erosion, structural fault or design fault.

Note that we do not insure you for storm surges in the first 72 hours of a new policy. Very limited exceptions apply. You can find more information on what is covered in the Product Disclosure Statement.

What’s not covered

There are some instances where your building and contents are not covered for loss or damage, such as when the damage was caused by actions or movements of the sea.

We do not cover loss or damage caused by erosion, vibration, subsidence, landslip, landslide, mudslide, collapse, shrinkage or any other earth movement.

Under AAMI Home Building insurance there are items we don't cover, like retaining walls, sea walls, garden borders, or sporting surfaces or courts such as a tennis court. We also do not cover the cost of cleaning undamaged contents under AAMI Home Contents. You can find more information on this and other instances you might not be covered in the Product Disclosure Statement.
