Life Insurance Without a Medical Exam: A Practical Guide

By  AAMI

Thinking of getting life insurance, but worried about needing a medical test? The good news is, it’s now possible to apply for life insurance without a medical exam. Here’s what you need to know.

What is life insurance?

Life insurance provides financial protection for your family if you are no longer around to support them. It pays a lump sum in the event of your death, or if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, which can be used to pay bills, settle debts and provide for their future.

While there are many types of life insurance – including life, total and permanent disability (TPD), trauma, funeral and income protection insurance - this article focuses on term life insurance, or death cover. It’s known as term cover because it provides cover for a set term or period. This means you can only receive a benefit if you die or develop a terminal illness during your policy term; once your term has elapsed, your cover ends.

Differences between traditional life insurance and no medical exam life insurance

When you apply for most types of life insurance, you will be asked a series of questions about your personal circumstances, such as your health, medical history (including any pre-existing conditions), occupation, income, lifestyle, and current and past insurance. This is known as the underwriting process.

Depending on the answers you give, some life insurers may then ask you to have a medical examination, such as a blood test, blood pressure test or urine test. You may be asked to do this if you:

  • Have an existing health condition
  • Have a family history of serious illness, or
  • Request a high level of financial coverage

At AAMI, we’ll ask you the same underwriting questions as other life insurers, but with our no medical exam life insurance, we won’t ask you to take a medical test before we’ll agree to cover you.

While some people might be worried about the underwriting process, it can actually have some surprising advantages. Once an insurer understands your health and medical history, they can offer you:

  • a range of cover options you can choose to suit your needs, and
  • premiums tailored to your health status.

Many insurers offer reduced premiums if you are in good health. Even if you have a pre-existing health condition, you may still be able to get cover, with exclusions or higher premiums to help manage the risk while obtaining the protection you want.

It’s important to be completely honest about your health issues when you are talking to a potential insurer, even if you are concerned you might not qualify for cover. If you have a pre-existing condition that you are aware of or a reasonable person should be aware of and don’t disclose it, and later make a claim, you may find your claim payment is reduced, or your claim is even refused.

  2. Compare policy options: every life insurance company is different. Comparing different policies can help you decide which options best suit your individual needs. You might want to consider coverage amounts, premium amounts, and policy terms.
  3. Review policy details: understand what is and is not covered by the policies you are considering, and whether they meet your specific needs.
  4. Get a quote: once you’ve chosen the policy features that are important to you, comparing quotes can help you make your choice.
