About Skilled Drivers

Our AAMI approved driver training program is conducted by Murcotts Driving Excellence. They provide a one day driving course designed to arm young drivers who are under 25 years of age with safe driving techniques and a better understanding of what it takes to be safe on the road.

Who can do the course?

The course is open to all AAMI customers who hold an AAMI Comprehensive Car policy (purchased or renewed on 19 June 2018 or after) and hold a P-Plate or full license, at a cost to you, and if:

you hold an AAMI Comprehensive Car policy (purchased or renewed on 19 June 2018 or after) and hold a P-Plate or full license and are under 25 years of age, are a listed driver on an AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance policy and you complete the course with an AAMI approved provider; or
your child or grandchild is under 25, is a listed driver on your AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance policy and they complete the course with an AAMI approved provider.

Then you, your child or grandchild are eligible to undertake the course at a cost to you and on completion you are eligible to receive up to a 10% discount on your AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance premium, until the first renewal on or after the participant turns 25 as long as the participant remains a listed driver. The discount does not apply to the portion of the premium relating to AAMI Roadside Assist, if you have purchased that option. AAMI does not pay for the course.

Unfortunately you can't do the course just yet

Yes, you can still do the course, at a cost to you, as long as you have either a P-Plate or full driving licence.

If you’re not an AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance customer you can still do the course at a cost to you. And if after completing the course you purchase a a AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance Policy (your Policy), you’ll be eligible for a discount on your Policy’s premium, until the first renewal on or after you turn 25 as long as you remain a listed driver. Vehicle dynamics - understanding what causes skids and vehicle instability
Key road laws - how much can you rely on road laws to keep you safe - practical interpretation

Note: All practical training is conducted at suburban speeds.

Times & Locations

The AAMI Approved Driver courses run from 8.15am to around 4.15pm.

Courses are located in all states.

Who it's conducted by

The courses are conducted by Murcotts Driving Excellence. The trainers hold all necessary qualifications relevant for the state in which the course is conducted.

Safety is our first priority

All courses are conducted in a controlled environment, under strict supervision and by experienced trainers. A trainer can decide if your vehicle is unsuitable to do the practical exams.

Bring your own car

We recommend you bring the car you usually drive. It doesn't have to be the car insured by AAMI, as long as it is registered.

Parents / moral support

Due to safety concerns spectators are not permitted.

Drivers licence

The trainer needs proof on the day that you have a current drivers licence.

Weather conditions

Come rain or shine, the AAMI Skilled Drivers Course will go ahead.

Please remove all loose items from the interior and exterior before you arrive.

How the discount works

Once you complete the AAMI Skilled Drivers Course, the related Comprehensive Car Insurance policy holder – whether it be you, your parent or grandparent – gets a discount on their premium.

The discount is applied until the first renewal on or after the participant turns 25 as long as the participant remains a listed driver. The discount does not apply to the portion of the premium relating to AAMI Roadside Assist, if you have purchased that option.

If I drive my parent's car and I'm on my parent's Comprehensive Car Insurance policy as a driver, do they get the discount?

Yes, as long as you're under 25 and a listed as a driver on their policy.

If you and your parents have separate policies, then only the Skilled Driver participant (you) who is under 25 will be eligible for the discount.

If my parents pay for my insurance, can I still get the discount for the course?

Yes, as long as the policy is under your (the Skilled Driver participant's) name, it doesn't matter who pays the premium.

What if I've already paid my insurance this year?

You'll receive the discount on the unexpired portion of your premium for the remaining period of insurance, as a refund. In subsequent years, the discount will be recognised when you renew, so long as the eligible Skilled Driver participant is still under 25 years of age at renewal and is a listed driver on the policy.
