ACT MAI Insurance FAQ
You’ll find many answers to the most common questions about AAMI MAI Insurance here. If you can’t find what you’re looking for or have a specific question regarding your own policy, please contact us.
I’m moving interstate. What do I need to do to transfer my registration?
If you’re moving to the ACT, you have up to 3 months to transfer your registration through Access Canberra. When you transfer your registration, you’ll have the opportunity to choose AAMI as your MAI Insurance provider.
If you’re moving away from the ACT, you’ll need to refer to your new state or territory’s requirements and timeframes for transferring your vehicle registration. If you’re moving to NSW or SA, you’ll be able to choose AAMI as your Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurer in your new state. Visit our NSW CTP Green Slip or SA CTP Insurance pages to learn more.
What happens to my MAI Insurance if I buy or sell a vehicle that is registered?
MAI Insurance is linked to the vehicle, not the owner. If you sell your vehicle, the MAI Insurance will be transferred to the new owner. Similarly, if you buy a vehicle, the MAI Insurance will be transferred to you.
Just make sure that you advise Access Canberra.
Can I cancel my ACT MAI Insurance?
Cancelling your MAI Insurance means cancelling your vehicle’s registration, which you can choose to do at any time. Once you’ve cancelled your registration, you won’t be allowed to drive your vehicle anymore.
You can lodge your request to cancel at your nearest Access Canberra Service Centre.
How are MAI Insurance premiums set for motor vehicles?
How long is my ACT MAI Insurance policy valid for?
MAI Insurance is included in your total registration fee paid to Access Canberra, therefore the length of your insurance policy will depend on whether you paid for a 3, 6 or 12-month term at the time of your vehicle registration or renewal.
How do I lodge an MAI Insurance claim?
You’ll find information about what you need to do to lodge an ACT MAI Insurance claim at Make a Claim for ACT MAI Insurance.
How can I update my contact information on my MAI Insurance policy?
Since your MAI Insurance is connected to your vehicle registration, you should contact Access Canberra to update your contact information.
How can I register a complaint or dispute for MAI Insurance?
At AAMI we take your feedback seriously. You can submit a complaint or feedback by visiting the Dispute Resolution page.
What happened to the ACT CTP Scheme?
On 1 February 2020 the ACT Government’s reforms to CTP went live. Under the new scheme, Canberrans receive fairer, faster and more comprehensive support if they are injured in a motor vehicle accident. To reflect the change, the name of the scheme changed from Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance to Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) Insurance.
