Frequently asked questions
Yes, AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance does cover windscreen replacement as standard, but you will need to pay an excess if you claim. You can choose to add Windscreen and Window Glass Cover as an Optional Cover that you pay extra for. If you do, when the only damage to your car is to the windscreen, window glass or sun roof, we cover the repair or replacement cost without you having to pay an excess. One excess free claim only in the period of insurance.
If you have Comprehensive Car Insurance and your car is assessed to be a total loss or a 'write off' from an incident covered by your policy, then instead of being repaired, the amount your car is covered for will be given as a cash payout (less any deductions).
If your car's less than 2 years old and you bought it new, we'll replace it with a new car of the same make, model and series (if available within 90 days), or similar if not available. If you choose not to accept the replacement car, or where an agreement cannot be reached between us on a replacement car, or a replacement car cannot be supplied, we will pay you the amount covered on your certificate of insurance (less any deductions). See the PDS for full details.
If you'd like to ensure that an additional driver is covered, you should list them on your policy. If someone who isn't listed is driving your car and an incident occurs, you may have to pay an additional excess, or you may have your claim denied.
Learner drivers are an exception. If the person supervising them is listed on the policy, the learner driver doesn't need to be. An additional age or inexperienced driver excess may apply though, in the event of a claim.
People with international licenses also need to be listed as an additional driver if they’re going to be driving your car regularly. As long as they're driving legally - that is, their license is recognised by the relevant state or territory authority - they'll be covered.
To make things simpler for you, AAMI takes care of the entire quote and repair process, using one of our preferred repairers. That means after you've lodged your claim, you can sit back, relax, and let us handle things.
Do I need to tell you about any modifications or accessories to my car?
Because we cover all legal modifications and accessories fitted to your car, there’s usually no need to list them on your policy. Just ensure the amount you cover your car for is enough to also include the value of all the insured accessories and modifications.
Two-wheel trailers attached to your car are covered by Comprehensive Car Insurance. As long as it’s attached to your car when the incident happens, we pay up to $1,000 for accidental damage. Theft of your attached trailer is also covered.
AAMI flexi excess is an additional excess payment you can choose, on top of your standard excess, that will kick in if you ever need to make a claim for which excess is payable. That is, a claim for an incident in which you’re at fault or can't provide the details of an at-fault driver.
Agreeing to a flexi premium means you'll have to pay a bit more at claim time, but it also means that your premium payments will be lower.
Yes, with limits.
When you get a quote, we'll offer a price that we think your car sits within. You can select a value from within that range, and that value will become your sum insured. That is, it’s the most we'll pay to repair or replace your car if you ever make a claim.

Check amount covered
In most cases, the replacement value of cars decrease over time, but in recent years, due to increased costs and constrained supply, we have seen some cars increase in value. As such, your amount covered will be automatically changed to reflect this.
You can increase or decrease your amount covered, within a specified range, and your premium will change accordingly.
You can also choose to insure your vehicle for Market Value. This will change your premium.
Refer to the PDS for details.
Kilometres driven
When you took out your policy, you would've given us an estimate of how much you drive your car in a year, and that figure informs your premium price. Usually, a higher estimate results in a higher premium, since your'e at greater risk of an incident. If you find yourself driving a lot less then you estimated, maybe because you're working from home or walking to the shops rather than driving, you can log in and adjust this figure. Doing so may reduce your premium a little.
Review listed drivers
Listing additional drivers on your policy can alter your premium, depending on their details and claims history. For example, if you have a teenager who used your car when they started driving but has since bought their own, they may no longer need to be listed. If you decide to remove them, your premium might be reduced.
Your address
If you've moved, make sure your address is updated on your policy. Your location can affect your premium, based on that location's level of risk, so your address being updated can result in your payments being adjusted. Fair warning; that adjustment can reduce your premium, or it may result in an increase. Either way, you'll ensure you're not at risk of having a claim denied or reduced due to incorrect address details.
Eligible policies
Eligible policies include Comprehensive Car Insurance.
Your excess
With AAMI Flexi-Premiums®, you can choose to lower your premium by increasing your excess This'll mean that, while your monthly or yearly premium is cheaper, you'll face more out-of-pocket costs if you make a claim where you're liable to pay an excess. Whether that trade-off is worth it is totally up to you, but it's worth considering.
